I had just heard those dreaded words from my nephrogist, "Better get ready to begin dialysis. It's time" I felt faint, kidneys were flashing before my eyes and the first question popped into my head, "how long is the cord on that dialysis machine anyway?" Bob and I loved to fish, I loved to camp and we traveled occassionally. How could I do all those things dragging that big machine around? OK, I knew I really wouldn't drag the machine around with me but the barrage of questions when told dialysis is imminent is real. Fear is the first emotion you deal with and once that has been done you start feeling emotions you never thought you would. I found that getting a knowledge of kidney disease, dialysis and transplant did help answer the questions and ease my mind. My favorite site is www.kidneyschool.org, an amazing online kidney disease learning center. Once my learning began my fears slowly disappeared and learning that I wasn't going to have to drag that darn machine around, made my day!
Until next time,
